Highway 427/409 Interchange Structural Rehabilitations, and Highway 409 Eastbound and Westbound Rehabilitation

Background

Key Components of the construction project include:

  • Repairs to seven (7) existing bridges within the Highway 427 and Highway 409 interchange and along Highway 409:

    • Highway 427 to Highway 409 ramp bridge over Goreway Drive

    • Highway 427 to Highway 401 ramp bridge over Goreway Drive

    • Flyover bridge connecting Highway 427 southbound to Highway 409 eastbound

    • Highway 409 bridge over Carlingview Drive eastbound

    • Highway 409 bridge over Carlingview Drive westbound

    • Highway 409 to Carlingview Drive off ramp

    • Highway 27 overpass bridge

  • Repairs to two (2) existing structural culverts within the Highway 427 and Highway 409 interchange:

    • Mimico Creek at Disco Road culvert

    • Culvert at the Highway 409 to Highway 427 off ramp

  • Rehabilitation of fourteen (14) existing retaining walls within the Highway 427 and Highway 409 interchange and along Highway 409

  • Removal of two (2) existing railway bridges over Highway 409

  • Repairs to road pavement and concrete base along Highway 409, including all ramps, between Highway 401 and Highway 427

  • Replacement of overhead highway signs;

  • Drainage upgrades, including new storm sewer on Highway 409 eastbound and westbound, west of Iron Street

  • New street lighting on Highway 27 (Marmac Drive and City View Drive) at the Highway 409 underpass

Project Timelines

Construction will take place in stages over four (4) construction seasons. During this time, traffic patterns will change, and drivers may experience delays.

The schedule below provides a general overview of planned work. All timelines are approximate and subject to change due to weather, site conditions, and construction progress. Updates will be provided in advance where possible.

Year 1 (2026)

  • Shoulder strengthening at various locations to prepare the roadway for upcoming work

  • Structural repairs to three (3) bridges within the Highway 427 and Highway 409 interchange

Year 2 (2027)

  • Continued repairs to three (3) bridges within the Highway 427 and Highway 409 interchange

  • Repairs to Highway 409 bridges over Carlingview Drive

  • Rehabilitation of retaining walls along Highway 427 and Highway 409.

Year 3 (2028)

  • Continued bridge repairs along Highway 409 over Carlingview Drive

  • Repairs to the Mimico Creek culvert and surrounding retaining walls

  • Major roadway work, including concrete base repairs along Highway 409 and connecting ramps

  • Replacement of overhead highway signs

  • Reconstruction of median barrier wall on Highway 409

  • Asphalt paving along Highway 409 and associated ramps

Year 4 (2029)

  • Final reconstruction of median and shoulder barriers along Highway 409

  • Demolition of the Aylmer Spur and Highbury Spur railway bridges

  • Additional concrete roadbase repairs along Highway 409 and at select ramp locations

  • Installation of new storm sewers on Highway 409 west of Iron Street

  • Replacement of overhead highway signs on Highway 409

  • Concrete patch repairs to retaining walls along Highway 409

  • Rehabilitation of the Highway 27 overpass bridge

  • Repairs to culvert below Highway 427 ramp to Highway 409

  • Final paving across the project limits

  • Installation of new street lighting on Highway 27 at the Highway 409 underpass and along Highway 409
